Brunei Darussalam supports the work advancement and goals of the International Maritime Organization, IMO, towards a safer, greener and more efficient maritime transport, promoting digitalisation, and strengthening support for seafarers and developing States. The country also reaffirmed the strong commitment to the objectives of the IMO. This was stated by the Minister of Transport and Infocommunications at the 34th Regular Session of the IMO Assembly held recently in London, United Kingdom.

 

In marking Brunei Darussalam's 40th year of IMO membership, Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha also emphasised the nation's longstanding partnership in advancing a safe, secure, and sustainable maritime industry. This includes modernising its Vessel Traffic Management System, and the implementation of the Maritime Single Window in March 2025. This was in line with the country's accession to the Convention on Facilitation of International Maritime Traffic.

 

On the 2023 IMO Strategy on the Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Ships, Yang Berhormat mentioned that the transition towards low-and-zero emission shipping must be inclusive and feasible for all member states, considering varying national capacities and circumstances. Yang Berhormat also highlighted the role of the maritime sector in driving economic diversification, trade facilitation, national resilience, and creating future-ready employment opportunities.

 

Yang Berhormat also held a series of bilateral discussions to explore potential collaboration in maritime development, including broader cooperation in transport, logistics, and connectivity.

 

Yang Berhormat held a a courtesy call with His Excellency Francis Zachariae, the Secretary-General of International Organization for Marine Aids to Navigation, IALA. During the courtesy call, Yang Berhormat highlighted Brunei Darussalam's efforts to strengthen maritime safety, including ongoing upgrades of navigational systems and infrastructure, as well as forthcoming plans to accede to the Convention on the IALA.
